Write personal letters
The personal letter genre serves various ends and may not necessarily obey a definitive template or plan. People often write personal letters in a conversational style, discussing topic that interest only the sender and the recipient. Such letters are often made up of references to shared experiences which may or may not be understood by anyone outside the ‘circle of trust.’ However, the conversational style has the advantage of being the least verbose and thus conducive of quick exchange of information – a property that is at times indispensable in writing a good essay. Write business letters
Business letters serve the specific purposes of communicating your intentions to your business partners, placing orders, or selling merchandize. Write a business or investigative report
A report of this type must have a clearly stated purpose which must relate to the intended content and readers. Introduction is where the purpose is usually declared. The essay may be titled Terms of Reference. The ‘terms’ refer to the reasons behind the investigation, the problem, the readers, or the actions that they are supposed to take after reading the report. The Introduction may also contain elements of the Conclusion.
Business and investigative reports have a straightforward style which is also suitable for certain types of essays, especially scientific ones. Write a newspaper report
A newspaper report should declare as concisely and impartially as possible the what, who, where, why, when, and how of any developments worth reporting, given the publication’s audience. Newspaper reporters are also concerned with the readability of the material but care even more about its clarity. Write feature articles of newspapers and magazines
Feature articles serve a variety of purposes, but all of them aim to inform, explain, comment, convince, entertain, and sometimes all of the above. TASK 1
Read a feature article from a magazine or newspaper. Use no more than 20 words to explain its purpose. Group exercise: members of a group are asked to read the same feature article and make their 20-word reports. The reports are then discussed and compared.
